Burst search method based on likelihood ratio in Poisson statistics

ABSTRACT Searching for X-ray and gamma-ray bursts, including Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), Soft Repeaters (SGRs), high energy transients associated with Gravitational wave (GW) events or Fast radio (FRBs), is of great importance in the multimessenger multiwavelength era. Although a coherent search based on likelihood ratio Gaussian statistics has been established utilized many studies, this Gaussian-based method could be problematic weak short which usually have very few counts. To deal all ones, here we propose Poisson statistics. We studied difference between Poisson-based methods by Monte Carlo simulations, find that advantages compared to case, especially bursts. Our results show that, low number counts, can provide higher significance than search, its (for background fluctuation) still generally follows χ2 distribution, making estimation searched convenient. Thus, suggest Poisson-likelihood more appropriate generic ones.
